How many alter egos or other personalities do you have from your internet travels and enterprises? 1, 3, 10 or even more.
We have all hidden behind false personas on or niche websites and Facebook additional accounts.
So Why Do We Do It
I think mainly its down to 2 things:
1. Fear
2. You’re Ashamed
Fear
We all have our own private lives and many of us like to keep them that way.
You can add to that what a lonely lot we internet marketers are sometimes.
We worked hard and earned ourselves the privilege of getting shot of the day job and working from home, so it feels nice to go it anonymously.
Add to that a sort of fear of failure and discovery by not only friends and family, but also by Google, Facebook, or whoever we are trying to fool.
We can hide behind that wall of anonymity and it doesn’t matter if we succeed or fail because no one knows it’s us
You’re Ashamed
This is the one that most of you won’t admit.
Why don’t you have the balls and the pride in your content and contribution to proudly give it an author and a face? Are you ashamed of the spam and dross you produced to get those sites ranking.
Out Of The Darkness & Into The Light
Now this isn’t a witch hunt, because we’ve all been there.
Rather a warning shot across the bows. The internet is changing.
A bland faceless website just doesn’t cut it anymore.
Having lived with Facebook and Twitter for so long people expect to be able to see the white’s of your eyes and gauge whether to trust you or not.
Hell with Google Author score they can even say how good you are now as well.
Just look at those people who let themselves be known freely – Stephen Fry on Twitter, Matt Cutts, Mark Thompson from WPGoldmine Frank Kern (Love him or hate him) and many more.
Once you come out of hiding, suddenly your writing and personality can come to life.
People and readers will appreciate it more and feel the urge to engage with you.
Suddenly you are a brand. Not in the Nike way, but more in that you are know for what you do and produce.
You are a real person who can be trusted more than shadowy John Doe’s around the world.
Wouldn’t it actually be nice and so much more relaxing to be yourself for a change.
Try it and let me know.
